Why Trees Decline After Construction or Renovations
Why this topic matters
Tree decline often appears months or years after construction. Trees are highly sensitive to changes in their environment, especially below ground.
What homeowners don’t realize
Tree roots extend far beyond the trunk, and most fibrous (absorbing) roots are concentrated in the top 30–45 cm of soil. These fine roots handle water and nutrient uptake and are easily damaged.
Buttress and structural roots grow downward and outward to anchor the tree. Even if anchoring roots remain, damage to shallow fibrous roots can severely impact tree health.
Construction can harm trees by:
- cutting/crushing roots
- compacting soil
- changing drainage
- raising/lowering grade
Bottom line
Construction doesn’t have to touch a tree to harm it. Root disturbance and soil compaction are common hidden causes.
