Why Is My Tree’s Bark Falling Off?

What’s Actually Happening
Species such as:
- London Plane (Platanus × acerifolia)
- American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)
- Sycamore Maple (Acer pseudoplatanus)
naturally shed bark as they mature.
Other trees like:
- Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia)
- Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum)
- Poplar (Populus spp.)
have deeply furrowed bark. Moisture can freeze within furrows and cause splits, which trees often seal naturally.
Machinery damage from renovations or street work can also cause bark loss.
How to Handle It
If bark loss is:
- Uniform and patterned → likely natural
- Localized with decay → assessment recommended
