Are Tree Roots Going to Damage My Foundation?
Usually not — but context matters.
How to Handle It
What’s Actually Happening
Roots grow outward in search of water and nutrients. Concrete does not provide nutrients and is not attractive to roots on its own.
Roots typically expand into existing cracks where moisture or soil is present — they do not normally bore through solid, intact concrete.
Fibrous roots often extend 1.5× or more beyond canopy width. Buttress roots enlarge over time to anchor the tree and can exert pressure if very close to foundations.
How to Handle It
- Monitor existing cracks
- Avoid planting large species close to structures
- Consider root pruning in certain situations
- Evaluate tree size relative to foundation proximity
From experience, roots rarely penetrate foundations — but large buttress roots near foundations can create pressure as they expand.
Bottom Line
Roots follow water and opportunity — not concrete.
